Are Your Parking Lots Safe?
-
Parking facilities vary in size, shape, layout, and design. These structures are unique to the needs of the property; however, some commonalities will always exist. There are certain locations in parking facilities, for example, that pose dangerous threats to not only drivers, but pedestrians as well. These problematic "hazard zones" can be found in almost any parking lot - regardless of where they are located, or how they are designed.

With such high accident rates in these facilities (see our March newsletter), there is an increased need to address the issue of safety and identify these dangerous areas.

How safe are your parking lots?

Let's explore these locations and see how proactive measures can help to create safer parking environments for all:
-
Zone # 1: In front of store entrances
-
Canadian Tire - Front Entrance
  • Very high pedestrian traffic - coming from both directions (entering and exiting store)
  • Creates obstacles for drivers
  • Pedestrians walking with purchased merchandise can drop items when crossing
  • Speeding / inattentive drivers can hit pedestrians
  • Stray shopping carts can easily roll into oncoming traffic
-
Zone # 2: Entry / exit points of the parking facility
-
Parking Lot Exit
  • High vehicle traffic
  • Often close to main roadway
  • Drivers may speed into parking lot or out into roadway without caution
  • Entrance / exit sometimes cuts through sidewalk putting other pedestrians at risk
-
Solution: Safety Rider Mini Hump
-
  • Slows down traffic to 10-15 mph (this is only an approximation) while maintaining a continuous traffic flow
  • Made from 100% recycled rubber tires
  • Interlocking design expands to any road width
  • High visibility with embedded highway tape
  • Tongue and groove system keeps product firmly in place
-
Zone # 3: Long stretches of straight roadway
-
Straight Roadway in Parking Lot
  • Drivers are tempted to speed through these areas if no traffic control devices are implemented
  • Drivers can become distracted while searching for a parking space
  • May not notice other vehicles backing out / leaving parking stalls
  • Pedestrians have no designated crosswalk and cut across roadway at their discretion
  • Creates unanticipated obstacles for drivers
-
Zone # 4: Major intersections
-
Parking Lot Intersection
  • High pedestrian and vehicle traffic
  • Drivers may ignore stop signs or other warning signals
  • Speeding vehicles may not notice approaching pedestrians or other drivers
  • Drivers not only have to wait for other vehicles' right-of-way, they also have to pay attention to passing pedestrians
  • Can be a very congested area
-
Zone # 5: Pedestrian cross-walks or walk-ways
-
Cross-Walk in Parking Lot
  • High pedestrian traffic
  • Sometimes in several locations within parking facility
  • Not always easily visible to drivers
  • Speeding vehicles pose great dangers to pedestrians
-
Solution: Easy Rider Speed Bump
-
  • Aggressive device to help reduce speeds to 2-5 mph (this is only an approximation)
  • Made from 100% recycled rubber tires
  • High visibility
  • Will not warp, crack, chip or rot
  • Can be used for temporary or permanent use
-
Please note: The above situations and solutions are only examples of how traffic control devices can be implemented to improve safety in parking facilities. Each individual case will differ, and proper assessment must be made in order to provide the appropriate solution.
-
In order to help reduce the likeliness that an accident will occur and to help improve safety in these areas, proper traffic control devices must be implemented, maintained, and controlled.
