In January 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a report on nontraffic crashes and noncrash incidents - events that had not routinely been tracked and collected in the past.
Not-in-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS)
"According to the 2007 Not-in-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS) system, an estimated 1,159 fatalities and 98,000 injuries occurred in nontraffic crashes such as single-vehicle crashes on private roads, collisions with pedestrians on driveways, and two-vehicle crashes in parking facilities. About half (614 of 1,159) of the nontraffic crash fatalities and about a third (34,000 of 98,000) of the nontraffic crash injuries involved nonoccupants

such as pedestrians or bicyclists. Backovers, where drivers reverse into and injure or kill nonoccupants, accounted for 19% of the nontraffic crash fatalities and 14% of the injuries." |

The findings of this study are not only enlightening, but have several implications for future programs the U.S. Department of Transportation may wish to implement. Issuing standards for safety technology in all automobiles as well as the recommendation of traffic safety programs on private property may be viable solutions. Whatever the outcome, these statistics provide an unfortunate reality on the dangers of driving and the need for action to improve safety in these areas. |
